Do you often feel down or upset? Do you just need a
lift? Here are 15 easy things to do that could make you feel happier.
Experiment and let us know what worked for you.
1. Smile. Even if you feel unhappy smiling can make
you feel better. Smile even when you don't feel like it and as often as you
can.
2. Laugh a lot. As with smiling this can make your
happiness increase as laughing helps with the release of endorphins and other
happiness-inducing hormones.
3. Do something crazy. If you are feeling unhappy do
something crazy, weird or pointless. It may lift your mood because afterwards
you may feel glad that you did it. Some suggestions: scream out loud, do a
silly dance, rearrange your room in a weird way, or talk in a funny voice.
4. Give gifts to your family and friends. Giving gives
as much pleasure as receiving.
5. Compliment people. Complimenting a person makes
them feel good about themselves and could make you feel happier too.
6. Get your hair done. Changing or neatening your
hairstyle can make you feel better about yourself.
7. Stay close to nature. Have plants at home and at
work. Go out into the park or countryside.
8. Listen to music. Rousing and happy music can be
especially effective in increasing your feeling of well being.
9. Treat yourself to a low cost treat. Buy yourself
something that costs a few pounds such as some chocolate, a magazine or a DVD,
whatever takes your fancy. You are worth spending the money on.
10. Surround yourself with pleasing scents. Use
potpourri, scented candles, air fresheners or oil diffusers to fill the air
with pleasant scents. Lavender is good for relaxation and rosemary is good for
decreasing anxiety.
11. Go and see a good movie. Watch a positive and fun
film to uplift you.
12. Do something creative. You could paint, make cards
for birthdays and Christmas, write a poem or play an instrument. Do whatever suits you best.
13. Take time out. If you have a busy life, be certain
to take some time out each day to do what you want. This could be anything that
you enjoy doing from reading a book to baking to cycling.
14. Keep close to family and friends and others you
care about who care about you. Personal relationships can have a much greater
impact on your happiness than other parts of your life, such as seeking to earn
a big salary. Consider living near to some family members or friends to keep in
closer contact with those who are close to you. Do not be afraid to tell the
people closest to you if you feel down as talking can make you feel better.
15. Be positive about your current job. Do have career
goals but also be positive about the job that you are in: What you do today,
whatever it is, is key to your present moment happiness.
Try out a few of these ideas and you could be a
happier person. And remember, your happiness is important. Let us know how you get on.
